I can't believe it is the last week of semester already! This unit has flown by and I have enjoyed it and every topic we have been taught so much.
Today we mostly wrapped up the unit by going over everything we have discussed in previous lectures, readings and tutorials. However we did look at how we can take a step further in creating a more sustainable life for ourselves. We were introduced to CERES Community Environment Park and while many of my fellow students had heard of it from going on school trips there, I hadn't had this opportunity as I'm not from Melbourne. CERES educates groups from students, teachers and youth on the issues of sustainability and they provide practical ideas all throughout their park on how we can do this.

The images above show how they are modelling a sustainable environment. I think it's really important that schools go on excursions to places such as CERES as children must be learning from a young age about sustainability and just how important it is that we make the switch to a more 'green' lifestyle. The cafe at CERES has incorporated some really clever ideas throughout the store. Some examples are passive lighting. They have grown vines to provide some shade to customers dining outside while still letting in enough sunshine. They have wooden block chairs and tables. Solar energy is used when cooking which I though was very inventive and clever. Another big one that I believe many stores can adopt themselves is that there are no take away cups of containers, customers must bring their own. The customers at CERES cafe often bring their own mugs from home to take their coffee away in.
I thought all of these were really cool ideas and it has inspired me to create things like these in my future classroom.

Thanks to Jenny for a wonderful semester of learning about new science concepts and ideas, I have really enjoyed it and will adopting many of the ideas and suggestions into my own future classroom.
